After four years in business, I finally stepped out of my comfort zone and got professional photos taken. Iโve always jumped in front of the camera when there is an opportunity, but Iโve never liked the results. Like many of us, Iโve been my own biggest critic.
I chose the sea as the backdropโitโs my happy place, whether Iโm paddleboarding or walking along the shore. Alice Stroyan was absolutely amazing! She made me feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the shoot (though Iโll never forgive her for suggesting running into the waves๐ฅถ๐ !).
Once I stopped criticizing myself, I realized just how many incredible shots she captured. Iโm so glad I took the leap. If youโre considering professional photos, I canโt recommend Alice enough!
This week marks the end of a rewarding journey for me as I wrap up my work with Alan, a client Iโve supported since December 2021. Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing ASDNEโs impressive growth, evolving from a sole trader operation to a thriving business with its own team.
While it’s always a bit bittersweet to say goodbye to a client, seeing the business reach new heights is genuinely inspiring. It’s a testament to Alan’s vision and hard work, and I feel incredibly proud to have been part of this chapter. Watching a business grow like this is the most satisfying part of what I do, and I look forward to supporting more clients in achieving their goals.
WorkerBee is officially 3 years old today! It’s been an incredible journey, proving that when you love what you do, it never feels like work. My journey began with the push from a challenging manager, and I can’t thank him enough for that nudge.
In the past year, I’ve expanded my client base beyond small businesses to include a local council business forum and a Community Interest Company (CIC). My expertise in data cleansing for spreadsheets has earned me numerous recommendations. Iโve also had the pleasure of working with Urban Green, maintaining and updating a spreadsheet to log all tasks needed to keep parks safe and beautiful.
Additionally, I continue to provide essential services like diary management, invoicing, and basic bookkeeping for various clients, including LollaMac, a jewellery maker and Alice Elizabeth Photography. Working with an entrepreneur Alan Sawyers and managing his diverse array of businesses has brought its own excitement, from organizing photoshoots to coordinating networking events.
As we enter Year 4, who will join the WorkerBee hive? If you’re looking for a reliable virtual PA to help streamline your business operations, let’s connect and see how I can help your business thrive!
We were delighted to see Andrea Holman from WorkerBee when she popped in last week. Andrea has kindly agreed to sponsor our running vests for all of our Great North Runners this year, allowing us to raise more funds on the day.
Andrea, owner of WorkerBee said โI couldn’t fathom the emotional turmoil parents must endure when their child is critically ill, and they’re torn between staying by their side and fulfilling their financial obligations. When I learned about the incredible support provided by the Charlie and Carter Foundation to these families, I knew I had to contribute. After reaching out to Laura to offer my assistance, we explored various avenues, including participating in the Great North Run. I started running in honour of my dad. While my days of running the Great North Run may be behind me, the vest sponsor is the perfect fit and allows me to remain connected to the GNR and supporting this cause in my own small way.โ
Sarah Cookson MBE says “We would like to extend our heartfelt thank you to Andrea, her kindness and support means a great deal to us, relieving us of this cost will allow us to deliver all of the funds raised from this event to our inspirational families!
During our chat, they inquired whether I’d be interested in being interviewed regarding my journey and their significant involvement in it โ which was truly impactful! Allison has consistently provided me with support and a listening ear whenever I’ve sought advice. Additionally, I find it rewarding to offer assistance to them occasionally.
The Interview
After receiving help from TEDCO Business Support and the NEA scheme, Andrea Holman successfully moved out of employment and into self-employment in 2021. Having recently celebrated her 2nd anniversary as a business owner, the founder of WorkerBee Virtual Assistant sat down with us to talk career journeys, the start-up process and bee-ing free to work on her own terms.
Andrea Holman has had a varied career working in a range of administrative and customer service roles for organisations as diverse as solicitors, car dealerships, asbestos treatment, facilities management and caravan servicing companies. But in 2021, coming out of the pandemic she decided that the time was right for a change. She says,
โI had found myself working in a job I really didnโt enjoy and with an employer who I felt didnโt treat his staff well. After one particular incident when he spoke to me in an unprofessional way I decided it was time to do something different.
โThe pandemic had made me realise that life is too short to put up with a working environment that makes you miserable.โ
While looking for another role, Andrea found herself supporting her partner at the time with administrative tasks and paperwork โ an area she had lots of experience in. It was at this point that she realised that there might be other small businesses in need of assistance with their admin, customer service and general office management tasks.
โAt around this time I found myself on a course run by TEDCO and I was introduced to Allison Nicks who helped me to shape this idea into something that I could see more clearly as a business. Thatโs how WorkerBee came about.
โIn fact, it was Allison who helped put me in touch with my very first client. She has been incredibly supportive and given me both the guidance and confidence I needed.
โObviously itโs stressful at the beginning when you first set up a company: are you going to have enough money and is it the right decision. But I was fortunate to have both the professional assistance and also a supportive network of friends and family.โ
WorkerBee: a Virtual PA for sole traders and SMEs
Asked about the services that WorkerBee offers, Andrea says,
โIโd say that the main services I provide can be defined as office management โ the kind of tasks that often take time and focus away from what a business owner really wants to be doing. By helping with customer service enquiries, order processing, book-keeping and even social media posting, I help organisations to spend their time doing what they do best and what earns them money.โ
Now working with an array of businesses including web designers, graphic designers, jewellery makers and environmental companies, Andrea says she has found a workโlife balance that sheโs been looking for:
โIโve not just got the right number of clients right now; Iโve also got the right type of clients. I work hard for them and am flexible around their needs. But they also understand that I also want to work flexibly so that I can spend time with my daughter or go on holiday at certain times of year.โ
